 James K. Tribble

From your days as a rank-and-file member of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America in Jacksonville, Illinois, through your years as a local union officer, staff member and Joint Board leader, you have been steadfast in the effort to empower workers.

You have continued your union's proud tradition of reaching beyond the workplace to lead the fight for social change.

You have placed your union in the forefront of the fight for fair trade laws, for universal health care and for the building of a progressive political movement.

And most importantly, you have renewed and reinvigorated UNITE's efforts to organize workers in the Chicago and Central States region as your contribution to the effort to rebuild the American labor movement.

For a lifetime devoted to the cause of working men and women, the Debs - Thomas - Harrington Dinner Committee is honored to present you its 1999 award.

 Jackie Kendall

You have devoted more than two decades to the education and training of a generation of activists.

You have inspired countless individuals to devote their lives to social justice, becoming professional organizers.

Your efforts have been instrumental to the growth and development of scores of organizations that utilize the power of people to take collective action on their own behalf.

Every important progressive movement of our time has been the beneficiary of the skills which were learned and the thinking that was sharpened under your tutelage at the Midwest Academy.

You have rejected the counsel of the cynics and nay-sayers and, in the tradition of Norman Thomas, Eugene Debs, and Michael Harrington, you have insisted upon both the need for and the possibility of rebuilding a strong left in this country.

For your dedication to the fight for a just society, the Debs - Thomas - Harrington Dinner Committee hereby presents to you its 1999 award.
