Good Morning Chicago DSA,
If you haven’t noticed, the DSA and talk of democratic socialism in the US has been everywhere the last few weeks. Whether it’s Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s rise to fame or DSA’s Abolish Ice actions (huge props to all of our activists that shut down a deportation flight on Friday, btw), we’re getting talked about! And this is a good thing. New members are signing up everyday and people are starting to see that a socialist future is the best way forward. However, while we’re getting attention from people who are excited for socialism, we’re also getting more attention from people on the right. We saw this last week at our convention when literal fascists put up flyers all around the meeting while we were in session. We’re also seeing this online. The number of comments from trolls on our social media pages have spiked recently.
I’m here to urge everybody to be cautious. I’d recommend that everybody check out this good guide on information security that national DSA put out. And when going to and leaving DSA events, make sure to be vigilant and, if possible, travel in groups.
With all that said, don’t stop talking about socialism! Keep engaging with your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, the person who compliments your cool pin on the train, baristas, drinking buddies, sober buddies, tinder matches, everybody else. Let them know what socialism is, what we do, and why it’s good! Then bring them with you to meetings and actions. The way we win is through people power, and we build people power by actually engaging with people face to face, meeting them where they are. So remember your ABCs: Always Be Careful and Always Be Chatting (about socialism). That’s my lesson for this week.
We’ve got pretty solid schedule for this week. Lot of good ways to get involved. I’ll see you out there, comrades 🙂
