This Week in the CDSA (July 15 – July 22)

Good Morning Chicago DSA,

Wow, what a week. If you missed it, Cynthia Nixon, progressive candidate for governor in NY and star of Sex and the City, declared that she was a democratic socialist and reached out to NYDSA for endorsement. While this definitely seems a bit opportunistic surrounding the Ocasio-Cortez victory, it’s really good that we’re starting to get more attention and people are recognizing that socialism is the future of left politics in the state. However, with that said, we also need to make sure that we aren’t compromising our ideals and beliefs as socialists for people who want to benefit from our movement. So, in honor of all the politicians who are suddenly interested in the DSA, I’d like to re-share the Primer Red series that our excellent Political Education Officer Ramsin Canon wrote last year. It’s a great introduction to the ideas at the core of socialism. The first one is on Dialectical Materialism, and you can find links to the rest of the series at the bottom. Highly recommend!

We’ve got a good looking week on the schedule for your enjoyment and fulfillment, very well balanced and spread out. A few working group meetings, a Happy Hour (haven’t had one of those in awhile!) and then on Saturday, the West Cook Branch is hosting a Brake Light Clinic (be sure to check the posting for that to see how you can help). There’s also a big North Side branch meeting on Thursday, which North Siders should try to get to if at all possible because we’ll be voting on bylaws.
I’ll see you out there, comrades 🙂
