This Week in the CDSA (September 1 – September 8)

Posted By | Categories This Week

Good Morning Chicago DSA,

Normally, this is the part of the email where I say that I hope you had a good week and maybe say something inspiring and sweet about socialism before transitioning to the events. Well, guess what, folks – I’m not doing that this week. This week we’re getting stuff done. We’re getting caught up. We’re taking care of business. We’re doing all that stuff that we keep putting off and forgetting about. So take a long drink of coffee and get ready. Cause we’re doing it.
Are you on the Slack yet? If not, why not? It’s a great way to not only stay up-to-date with CDSA but to do real time organizing with your working groups and branches. You can also get to know other CDSA socialists there too! And the more people we have using it the better a tool it is. Here’s an invite link for you if you lost the last one we sent out. And let us know if you have any questions.
Okay, that’s done. Great work. Here’s another question for you: have you renewed your dues yet? And if you have or haven’t, have you switched to monthly?  Switching to monthly is great, because it saves you from one large yearly payment plus you won’t have to remember to renew every year. Here’s the link to go do that. Won’t take long, I promise.
So you’ve got your National Dues taken care of now which is amazing. Have you considered donating a little extra to Chicago DSA? CDSA only sees a small portion of the dues that get paid to national, and as an organization that’s trying to create big change in Chicago, we need all the resources we can get. If you have a spare 5 or 10 or 20 dollars a month, consider clicking on this link right here and donating to CDSA. Both one time or recurring monthly donations accepted.
Wow. We’re really flying through this. One more question: has your address changed since you last signed up with DSA? Have you updated that? If not, please do that! It’s really good to know where are members are so we can pass them relevant information. Click this link to update your contact information.
Alright, that’s it! Not too bad, huh? Now that we’re finished, you can sit back, relax and read through this weeks events. You’ve earned it. I’ll see you out there, comrades.

  • Justice for Laquan McDonald Rally; 8 AM – 10 AM; Cook County Criminal Courthouse; 2650 S. California Ave
CDSA will be rallying with CAARPR, BYP-100, and several organizations Wednesday morning at the opening of the Jason Van Dyke trial for the murder of Laquan McDonald. The rally serves as a reminder to Rahm Emanuel and the Chicago Police Department that DSA and others will not stand silent on their crimes. We encourage all DSA members to participate or support the September 5th rally at the courthouse at 26th and California, and future rallies related to the Van Dyke trial.

  • CDSA Executive Committee Meeting; 12 PM – 2 PM; CDSA Office; 3411 W. Diversey Ave.
Join us at the September meeting of CDSA’s Executive Committee!
This month, we will have a fully seated EC with officers and branch representatives who will be planning our October general meeting, discussing proposals brought to the EC, and hearing monthly reports from our committees and officers.
All CDSA members are welcome, but only EC members can vote.
Sunday, September 9

  • Anti-Nazi Cookout; 12 PM – 4 PM; Kilbourn Park; 3501 N. Kilbourn Ave
Earlier this year, neo-Nazis placed swastika stickers around Kilbourn Park with razor blades hidden underneath. We can’t allow white supremacists to intimidate people of color in our city. So we’re holding a community event with free food and inviting both DSA members and our neighbors in the Kilbourn Park/Irving Park area to celebrate our community and reject white supremacy. We believe Chicago has room for everyone — all races, genders, and ethnicities — and no room for white supremacists.

  • West Cook Monthly Branch Meeting; 1 PM – 3 PM; Oak Park Public Library; 834 Lake St.
Monthly meeting, including branch business and planning for brake light clinics and future actions.
We’ll be meeting at Oak Park Library on the First Floor in the Community Engagement Space

        • Midwest Socialist Podcast: Joanna Was There in 1968
This week marked the 50th anniversary of the 1986 protests of the Democratic National convention. Jacobin recently sponsored an event in which managing editor Micah Uetricht interviewed long time leftist activist Joanna Misnik about her experience organizing in 1968 and in the years the followed. She demonstrated alongside everyone from Allen Ginsberg to Abbie Hofman and learned from the victories and defeats of their movements.
