Instructions and Guidelines for 2018 Membership Convention Bylaws Revisions

Chicago Democratic Socialists of America, Bylaws Revision Committee
May 15, 2018

Comrades! The annual membership convention is being held on June 30, 2018 (more details coming soon). At this meeting we will not only be electing our officers, but debating and passing new Bylaws for the Chapter.

Chapter Bylaws are an important way to make sure the Chapter operates effectively and efficiently. The Bylaws Revision Committee is happy to present the proposed revisions to the current Bylaws. We are calling these revisions the Committee Revision.

The membership convention is a deliberative, legislative body–meaning you all are the legislators! To ensure robust debate and participation while also acting within the confines of the current Bylaws and Robert’s Rules of Order, we have prepared a variety of ways Members can participate leading up to and during the Convention:

1. Submit suggested comments on the Committee Revision to the Bylaws Revision Committee by May 30, 2018 at 7PM CST. The Committee will review these comments and either adopt or decline them by June 02, 2018. Use THIS FORM to submit comments.

NOTE: → → If your suggestion is not adopted, germane amendments to the Committee Revision may still be raised on the floor at the Convention. ← ←

2. Submit your own amendments (“Independent Amendments”) to the → current Bylaws ← by June 09, 2018. The Bylaws Revision Committee will review them, collect them, where applicable consolidate identical or substantially similar proposals, and publish them to the Membership no later than June 16, 2008. Use THIS FORM to submit proposed amendments to the current Bylaws (not suggestions for the Committee Revision!).

3. At the Convention, there will be debate and voting for the Committee Revision, proposed amendments to the Committee Revision, and Independent Amendments to the current Bylaws.

The Executive Committee is also organizing discussion groups/townhalls for early June to give insight into how the process will look on the day of the Convention, explain the bylaws elements, train on Robert’s Rules, and have discussions.

In the next two weeks, we will also publish a short guide to the floor procedure for the Convention with a Robert’s Rules cheat sheet.
