The regular monthly meeting of the Executive Committee (EC) of Chicago Democratic Socialists of America (CDSA) was called to order at 12:05PM May 11, 2019 by Lucie.

Lucie reviewed feminist process.

Joe moved to adopt the agenda. The motion was seconded. Will moved to amend the agenda to include two minutes at the end of the updates section to discuss endorsement of the Socialism 2019 Conference. The motion to amend was seconded and adopted. The motion to adopt the agenda as amended was adopted unanimously by members present.Joe moved to adopt the April EC minutes. The motion was seconded and adopted unanimously by members present.

Ed provided a report of the chapter’s finances and the upcoming Debs Dinner.

Sarah R gave a report on the Lift the Ban campaign.

Sam gave a report on the Democratize ComEd campaign.

Jen Z gave a report on the Medicare for all campaign.

Lillian moved to amend the agenda and allow for five minutes for her to give an update as the campaigns coordinator. The motion was seconded and adopted. Lillian proceeded to give her update.

Bridget G gave a report on the chapter’s abortion bowl-a-thon team.

Leonard and Lucie spoke on the upcoming deadlines for the June chapter convention. A motion was made to constitute an ad hoc committee of Sean D, John, Anna, Lucie, Leonard, Ramsin, Waleeta, and Rachel to write the agenda for the convetion. The motion was seconded and adopted. Leonard and Joe gave an update on the ongoing chapter delegate election to the national convention.

Marianela and Rachel spoke on their intentions to run for the National Political Committee and receive the chapter’s nomination at the June Convention.

JP moved that Chicago DSA endorse the Socialism 2019 Conference and offer the Conference support including promotions through our internal and external communications platforms, promotion at branch meetings, and soliciting volunteer support including for conference security, childcare, organizing social events, and other opportunities as they arise. The motion was seconded and adopted. Sarah H presented on a proposal to create a position of liaison to city council. After discussion and amendment, Ramsin moved Item 1 to form a City Council liaison position. The motion was seconded and adopted. Lucie moved for Chicago DSA to budget $100 to reimburse event organizers for snacks for attendees of the BYP100 event Cover-Ups, Black Sites & Surveillance. Joe moved for Chicago DSA to budget $240 for the Delegate and EC Officer Elections for use of OpaVote. (23 Ayes: Joe A, Will B, Melinda B, Ramsin C, Waleeta C, Spencer C, Ed C, Sean D, Sean E, Anna F, Amy G, Isa J, JP K, Ryan L, Lucie M, Lillian O, Robin P, Leonard P, Anthony Q, Zach S, John T, Sarah R, Rachel Z; 0 Nays; 0 Abstentions)

Lucie moved for the Executive Committee to enter into executive session. The motion was seconded and adopted unanimously by members present.

After exiting executive session, Leonard moved to adjourn the meeting at 2:44PM. The motion was seconded and adopted unanimously by members present.

 

 

Item 1

WHEREAS Chicago DSA members have expressed a desire to have an open line of communication with CDSA affiliated aldermen;

WHEREAS CDSA affiliated aldermen require a clear intermediary for coordinating between their offices and CDSA

WHEREAS CDSA members require a clear intermediary for coordinating between the chapter and elected officials

WHEREAS the Executive Committee has the power and responsibility to create a new position to liaison between the chapter and elected aldermen

BE IT RESOLVED:

  1. The EC create a provisional City Council Liaison, tasked with:
    1. Communicating between CDSA’s Electoral working group, Executive Committee, research committee, campaign coordination committee, and endorsed elected officials.
    2. Communicating DSA’s priorities to electeds.
    3. Providing periodic updates to the EC and directly to members on city, state and federal elected activity.
  2. The liaison will be appointed by the co-chairs with approval of the Executive Committee no later than June 6.
  3. The liaison will communicate with elected officials via an official CDSA email account.
