This Week In The CDSA (August 25 – September 1)

Posted By | Categories This Week

Good Morning Chicago DSA,

Folks, we’ve got a party on our hands. Today, at The Hideout, we’ve got food and drinks and the good people from our chapter campaigns ready to show you why CDSA is the greatest organization… (checks notes) …in the city of Chicago. (Really? Feels too small, but OK.) Come on out and have a good time with us and you’ll leave energized and ready to take over the world.

See you there.

Sunday, August 25
  • Lift The Ban North Side Canvass; 11 AM – 2:30 PM; 33rd Ward Working Families, 3248 W. Montrose Ave.

It’s time to organize the working class of Chicago to fight gentrification and the power of corporate landlords. We’ll be building a working-class movement around housing by enlisting neighbors in Alderman Rossana’s ward. It’s us against the real estate lobby, and our power comes down to the coalition we can build from our neighbors. We’ll do introductions, a brief training, grab lit and hit the streets!

  • IL-5th Congressional District Coalition Medicare For All Canvass; 11 AM – 2 PM; Heritage Bicycles and Coffee, 2959 N. Lincoln Ave.

Join Chicago DSA, Jane Addams Senior Caucus, Illinois Single Payer Coalition, PNHP, and our allies in the fight for Medicare for All! In our first 5th district coalition canvass, we’ll be knocking doors and talking Medicare for All in Rep. Mike Quigley’s neighborhood. Come help build the movement that will push Mike Quigley to co-sponsor the Medicare for All Act and get us one step closer to true Medicare for All! Whether it’s your first time canvassing or your 100th, we can use your help! If climbing stairs isn’t for you, some of us will be going out to talk to folks around some nearby churches. And for those who are interested, our DSA contingent will be going to Chicago DSA’s Socialist Summer BBQ en masse after the canvass!

  • Socialist Summer BBQ; 1 – 5 PM; The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia

Join the CDSA chapter campaigns on August 25th for brats, bags, burgs, and Bernie! (he probably can’t make it, sorry). We will be grilling on the patio of The Hideout, there are a few steps to get inside where the bathroom is located. Families are welcome, as long as underage persons are accompanied by an adult.

  • Political Education Facilitator Training; 1 – 3:30 PM; CDSA Office, 3411 W. Diversey Ave.

The Socialist Night School team of the Political Education Committee will be holding a facilitation training for members interested in learning the skills of facilitation. If you’re interested in being a group discussion facilitator for the Night School, or would like to learn facilitation skills for political education events, please RSVP here: https://forms.gle/2WPWV9c69ZBp91UH8. We will be discussing a reading and will be sending the reading out to interested members who RSVP, so it is important that you RSVP!

Monday, August 26
  • Communications Committee Meeting; 7 – 9 PM; CDSA Office, 3411 W. Diversey Ave.

Join the CDSA Communications Committee for our August meeting! We’ll be discussing social media, video, podcast, our print publication, and our new Arts & Culture team. We’ve got a lot of projects to work on, and if you’ve never been to a CDSA meeting before, the smaller working group meetings are a great way to get involved. Our meetings are open to members and non-members, and we hope you’ll join us!

Wednesday, August 28
  • Electoral Working Group Meeting; 6:30 – 8:30 PM; Teamster City, 1645 W. Jackson Blvd.

Join the EWG for our monthly meeting! We will be discussing statewide seats with progressive challengers, IPO’s, the AMAZING Red Star Bulletin and much more!

  • AfroSocialists + Socialists of Color Caucus Meeting; 6:30 – 8 PM; Harold Washington Library, 400 S. State St.

Come to our August caucus meeting! AfroSoc + SoC is a caucus designed to explicitly create a PoC space that allows conversations, strategies, and organizing around systemic issues facing our community. If you have any questions, reach out to Anthony Karr.

  • Grievance Policy. If you ever feel you are being harassed by another member of DSA, or made to feel uncomfortable by a member, or have a conflict with another member, please reach out to hgo@chicagodsa.org to get in touch with our chapter’s Harassment and Grievance Officers.
  • Announcing the No Sanctions, No War on Iran Ad Hoc Committee: The Trump administration pulling out of the Iran nuclear agreement and imposing sanctions on Iran brought us to within minutes of a shooting war. The threat still exists and will continue to do so as long as sanctions and the US’s campaign of “maximum pressure” continues. Chicago can’t afford another war! The Ad Hoc committee plans to: 1) provide education on Iran, the history of the region and US intervention, the effect of sanctions, and how to avert war; 2) reach out to organizations like anti-war veterans’ groups and homeless advocates, labor unions, mental health advocates, and others who are affected by another potential war; 3) reach out to our DSA Alderpersons for a letter of support and a possible resolution introduced to City Council. The committee will officially start work in a couple of weeks. If interested to find out more or to work with the committee, contact: Saman at p70volkl@yahoo.com and Sophie at NoIranSanctions@gmail.com.
