This Week in the Chicago DSA (October 6 – 13)

Posted By | Categories This Week

Good Morning Chicago DSA,

We are inching closer to a big honkin’ strike, with teachers and support staff at Chicago Public Schools still being given the cold shoulder by the city. If you weren’t already aware, the Executive Committee voted last month to create a solidarity campaign under the Labor Branch to support the workers as they prepare to strike. That campaign has two canvasses and a happy hour this week, if that’s the sort of thing you’re interested in. PLEASE NOTE: The canvasses on Tuesday and Thursday are scheduled for the morning, not the evening. I know the vast majority of our events, especially those during the week, happen at night, but these are timed for morning rush hour.

It’s also a big week for our #DemocratizeComEd campaign, with two canvasses and a meeting for them. Plus, be sure to check out another session of our Socialist Night School on Thursday.

On another note, if you missed last week’s general membership meeting, we overwhelmingly voted to endorse Anthony Clark for US. Congress (IL-7). Anthony is a hell of a candidate and has a long-serving incumbent, a progressive challenger, and a more neoliberal challenger to go up against, so I hope you’re ready to get out there and fight for Anthony. He’s the only one running a true Class Struggle Campaign and the only one who has endorsed Bernie Sanders in the race. For more information on the campaign, you can visit his website at voteanthonyclark.com.

Keep up the good work, comrades. I’ll see you out there.

Sunday, October 6
  • Democratize ComEd 32nd Ward Canvass; 11 AM – 2 PM; Red June Cafe, 2020 N. Leavitt St.

Do you believe we should own our energy? Join us for a canvass in the 32nd Ward for the #DemocratizeComEd Campaign! For the first time in 30 years, ComEd is renegotiating its contract with the city. Now’s the time for us to push for a city-owned electric utility with an elected board, aggressive renewable energy targets, progressive rates, and green, union jobs to maintain infrastructure. If we democratize ComEd, we can serve our communities and the environment instead of investors. We will be canvassing in the 32nd Ward to talk to residents about their experiences and what we’re fighting for. Email DemComEd@gmail.com for more information.

Tuesday, October 8
  • CPS Workers Solidarity Brown Line Canvass; 6:30 – 8 AM; Kimball Brown Line Stop, 4755 N. Kimball Ave.

CTU and SEIU73 workers in Chicago Public Schools have set an October 17th date for a potential strike. Mayor Lightfoot and CPS have gone on a propaganda offensive in an effort to break public support strike by distorting the contents of the contract offers they have made. Join as we talk to commuters along to Brown Line to solidify community support for the unions’ demands for a public education system that serves ALL Chicagoans. We’ll be meeting at 6:30 AM for training. Canvassers will fan out to stops between Kimball and Western to canvass.

  • #DemocratizeComEd Political Education Committee Meeting; 7 – 8:30 PM; CDSA Office, 3411 W. Diversey Ave.

We are working hard to #DemocratizeComEd! We can’t win this campaign unless Chicagoans see public ownership and democratic control of our energy as a viable alternative to the status quo corporate monopoly. This is where the crucial work of political education comes in. Join us if you want to help plan popular education events, write blog posts, make videos, and more!

Thursday, October 10
  • CPS Workers Solidarity Green Line Canvass; 6:30 – 8 AM; Garfield Green Line Stop, 320 E. Garfield Ave.

CTU and SEIU73 workers in Chicago Public Schools have set an October 17th date for a potential strike. Mayor Lightfoot and CPS have gone on a propaganda offensive in an effort to break public support strike by distorting the contents of the contract offers they have made. Join as we talk to commuters along to Green Line to solidify community support for the unions’ demands for a public education system that serves ALL Chicagoans. We’ll be meeting at 6:30 AM for training. Canvassers will fan out to stops along the Green Line to canvass.

  • Socialist Night School: Neoliberalism and Finance Capitalism; 7 – 9 PM; CDSA Office, 3411 W. Diversey Ave.

At this Night School we will discuss the meaning of “neoliberalism,” why we struggle to fight it, and the meaning and role of “big finance” in socialist struggle. You can find the readings on the event page linked above.

Friday, October 11
  • Happy Hour For Striking CPS Workers; 5 – 7 PM; The Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia

The Hideout is hosting a Happy Hour for the (potential) strike of CTU & SEIU 73 workers in Chicago Public Schools. We’ll be holding a fundraiser as well to contribute to our Bread4Ed Solidarity Fund! Come out and enjoy the Hideout’s CPS Strike drink special, a Teacher’s Handshake (Virtue CIder + shot of Malort).

Saturday, October 12
  • IL-5 Medicare For All Canvass; 1 – 4 PM; Libero Cafe, 5074 N. Lincoln Ave.

Join Chicago DSA’s Medicare for All campaign as we knock doors and talk to Chicagoans about Medicare for All and Democratic Socialism, and build pressure on IL-5 representative Mike Quigley to co-sponsor HR 1384! Don’t worry if you’re new to canvassing—we’ll provide a quick training at 1pm, and then hit the pavement to build the movement for Medicare for All.

Sunday, October 13
  • Democratize ComEd 32nd Ward Canvass; 11 AM – 2 PM; Red June Cafe, 2020 N. Leavitt St.

Do you believe we should own our energy? Join us for a canvass in the 32nd Ward for the #DemocratizeComEd Campaign! • West Cook Branch Meeting; 1 – 3 PM; Cicero Public Library, 5225 W. Cermak Rd.

Join the WCDSA Branch to learn more about all the exciting work being done in CDSA on the West Side! There will be snacks!

  • New Member Orientation; 2 – 4 PM; United Church of Rogers Park, 1545 W. Morse Ave.

The Chicago Democratic Socialists of America are building a mass working-class movement in Chicago by taking on fights like rent control, Medicare for all, public control of utilities, supporting striking workers, building grassroots support for Bernie, and ending police brutality and immigrant detention. There are so many ways to get involved, and we need your help! This is an orientation for those brand new to DSA, those who want a refresher, or those looking for new ways to plug in to the work of the chapter. It will include an introduction to democratic socialism, the work of CDSA, and information about our many campaigns.
