Socialist Night School: Electoral Politics
December 1, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Eugene Debs and the Socialist Party of America were once an insurgent political force that threatened Democratic and Republican hegemony alike in electoral politics. While SPA is no more, DSA (itself a distant relative of SPA) is building off the momentum of Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and electing democratic socialists to office like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Julia Salazar, Carlos Ramirez-Rosa and many more into congress, state houses, and into city councils across the country. In our third session of Night School, we examine the role of electoralism in Socialist politics, and the corresponding challenges, strategies, and critiques of building a mass working-class party like the one outlined by Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto.
