Solidarity Economy Working Group

December 19, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Solidarity. Equity In All Dimensions. Participatory Democracy. Sustainability. Pluralism. These are the five principles used by the US Solidarity Economy Network to define the solidarity economy.

Solidarity is a cohesion developed in the course of common struggle. A solidarity economy is how we build a parallel economic infrastructure in the present which aligns with our vision of a more free, democratic, and humane society that serves people in ways extractive capitalism can not and will not. At this month’s meeting, we will:

–Begin monthly readings with “Solidarity Economy: Building an Economy for People & Planet” by Emily Kawano for The Next System Project available at the following link https://thenextsystem.org/learn/stories/solidarity-economy-building-economy-people-planet

–recap recent developments in Chicago’s solidarity economy landscape

–discuss ways to introduce solidarity economy concepts during the upcoming electoral cycle

–brainstorm popular education projects to grow the public understanding of a solidarity economy
